MYSTERIOUS MOODS

Some Canadian designers just don’t make the cut! But nothing could be further from the truth with Zoran Dobric. The Yugoslavian-born designer studied around the globe and finally settled down in Toronto, carving out a place of his own in the Canadian fashion industry.

Everything in his collection has an element of surprise and can easily be confused as wearable art. There is simply no comparison between what Zoran produces to what the big-box fashion retailers try to cram down our throats. The Zoran Dobric line is handcrafted and no two-pieces are ever alike. The most fascinating thing about the collection is its ability to fuse structure with defiance in an edgy way.

“I enjoy both men’s and women’s wear, but menswear is fun because I can wear what I design,” says Zoran. “I think I may be in more touch with reality when I design menswear because I would never design something I would not wear.”

The theme for the Fall line was nocturnal winter landscapes. “Everything was dark and abstract with silver accents and mysterious moods,” says Zoran. The menswear collection was mostly grey, white, and abstract prints that embodied the artful elements of a Zoran Dobric piece.

The collection ranges from $65 for a t-shirt to $500 for a blazer or dress. The men’s line is available at Model Citizen in Toronto and the women’s collection is available in Toronto at Boutique le Trou.

And what’s in for menswear this Fall? “Everything skinny from pants to coats, it's the shrunken silhouette,” said Zoran. “But for me, it’s about personal style and not fashion.” We couldn’t agree with him more.
