Rae Spoon

Rae Spoon is a transgendered, ex-country singer from Calgary. Not joking here. After moving to Eastern Germany for a winter, Spoon began writing a more experimental, folk-inspired album about his experiences travelling through Canada, and his fourth solo album, superioryouareinferior (Superior You Are Inferior), was born.

Out on Washboard Records, the album is dark and haunting as Spoon takes you down the highways from the Yukon to Newfoundland, all from co-producer Lorrie Matheson’s Calgary studio. Spoon’s voice is free-spirited, untamed and raw over dissonant and rhythmic accompaniment. “Come on Forest Fire Burn the Disco Down” is chant-like and addictive as Spoon meditates on ongoing colonialism in Canada. In another song, “We Become Our Own Wolves,” Spoon presents his version of the love ballad as he longingly compares the relationship he has with a partner to that of wolves.

Spoon will be touring Eastern Canada along with Halifax darlings, Ghost Bees, up until mid-December, so be sure to check  out the concert for a night of eclecticism and national reflection. For a complete list of tour dates, check out Spoon’s MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/raespoon.
