Of course, the hottest accessory on everyone’s lips recently is Apple’s iPhone, which was released to mad fanfare – including crowds who lined up overnight in New York – in the United States on June 29. And now, starting in September, Levi’s will be distributing its very first telephone collection – at least in Europe. The phone can be hooked to denim jeans with a provided metal chain and will retail for approximately 500 euros.

Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos, formerly of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund-winning sportswear label Trovata, have announced they will launch a new line called Shipley & Halmos in time for the Spring 2008 selling season. They will do so from their new home in Manhattan, where they relocated from Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Trovata will continue to be designed by John Whitledge, the sole remaining member of what started out as a design quartet.

And while Los Angeles is sad to see Shipley and Halmos leave, the fashion world was devastated at the June 17 death of Gianfranco Ferre due to a brain hemorrhage. According to FashionWatch.com, a company spokesperson was quoted as saying, “He left a very important legacy, and all important legacies are difficult to manage,” referring, perhaps, to the very large shoes to now be filled at the design house. Fortunately, Ferre had already completed his next two collections before his death. This should give the organization sufficient time to find a successor – at least for his role as creative director.

In 2004, the Jones Apparel Group paid less than half what Barneys recently sold for: a reported $825 million US. Istithmar is expected to establish a global presence for the 84-year-old retailer, with new stores in other countries, particularly in the Middle East.
