Jill Barber

How fitting it is that Jill Barber will be taking her road trip–perfect songs on the road this summer. Based in Nova Scotia, Barber started out by singing backup on her brother Matt’s debut album, Means and Ends, in the early millennium. However, since the release of her own debut album, Oh Heart, in 2004, and her follow-up album, For All Time, released last year, Barber is really starting to create a significant space of her own.

Filled with pop, folk, bluegrass, and alternative country influences, Barber’s songs are both simply crafted and easy to listen and sing along to. The single “Hard Line,” off her latest album, is proof in itself that Barber is a truly brilliant songwriter. The song features talented bluegrass instrumentalists coupled with Barber’s sweet and timeless-sounding vocals. Those who are already fans of fellow Canadian songstresses Sarah Harmer and Sarah Slean will find themselves charmed by Barber’s enchanting voice.

Barber has been touring the Maritimes extensively since the end of June, and will continue to do so until early August. From there, she will be taking her honky-tonk piano and candid love lyrics over the Atlantic to tour the United Kingdom. If you are one of the lucky ones who gets to spend the summer in the sunny Maritimes, then make your friends extra-jealous by taking in one of the many scheduled Barber shows while you’re there.
