What’s That Noise?

Lights

Lights’ music career closely mimics her musical style: dream pop. The now Toronto-based singer first discovered her aptitude for music when she learned to play the guitar at the age 11. After asking if she could sing at a model casting for Walmart, Lights began writing for Sony/ATV Music Publishing and her songs were heard on Old Navy commercials.

Before even releasing her first official full-length record, Lights had already landed on the Canadian Hot 100 with two singles, “Drive My Soul” and “February Air” and won a 2009 Juno Award for New Artist of the Year… all before the age of 22.

This fall, Lights is releasing her debut, The Listening, and heading out on a cross-country tour in support of it. Lights’ sound is best described as heavily synthesized dream pop. New singles “Ice” and “Saviour” are proof of Lights’ talented pop songwriting ability. Her vocals light and bubbly but powerful at the same time and are best compared to Vanessa Carlton and Ashlee Simpson’s. The majority of her accompaniment, provided by Adam Weaver on synths and Maurie Kaufmann on drums during her live set, is minimal, airy, and fast-paced.

Lights will be supporting Keane on their Canadian tour, which definitely makes for a great pop tour. For a complete list of tour dates, visit Lights’ MySpace at http://www.myspace.com/lights.
