Let There Be Fashion

Posted on 28 September 2010 by Nicole Stewart

Vancouver Community College (VCC) will be hosting their annual fashion gala, Fiat Mode XXIII, on September 29, 2010 at the Rocky Mountaineer Station, located at 1755 Cottrell Street in Vancouver, BC.

After placing graduates at esteemed design houses like Oscar de la Renta, the VCC show is a great place to see the future of Vancouver’s fashion industry.

This year, twenty-one graduates are preparing to highlight pieces from their collection. Students have driven design by inspiration. Take for example Karen Niven, whose designs were inspired by Manhattan in the 1950s, and Blake Hyland, whose collection is about people, places, and things.

Support the budding design community by attending the show on September 29 – doors open at 7pm and the evening gala begins at 8pm. Tickets are $35 and $25 for students. Find tickets online at www.vcc.ca/fashionshow/.

Cottage Days are relatively unknown, but Vancouver folk duo Colin Spensley and Samantha Shea create beautiful, mellow electro-acoustic songs, while rehearsing in an old underground space in the hub of Strathcona.

Our favourite song is Everything was beautiful, and now, and can’t wait until these two release their first album. Visit MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/cottagedays).

Vancouver is on a mission to be one of the greenest cities on earth. Yes, we eat locally and organically and recycling is a must, but how often do we stop to think about what we are wearing? The local warriors in Vancouver’s budding eco scene sure do!

Leading the tribe is Myriam Laroche, the mastermind behind the first Eco Fashion Week, happening in Vancouver from September 27-30, 2010 in conjunction with Aveda, the presenting sponsor of the show.

Runway shows will be held at the new Creekside Community Centre in the Olympic Village, featuring international designers like Lara Miller and Prophetik, in addition to well-known local talent like Nicole Bridger, Nixxi, Kim Cathers, Lav & Kush, Lara Presber, and Margarita Angelatos’ two lines — Red Jade and Peridot Kiss.

The green carpet VIP closing gala will be at Club 560 (560 Seymour Street) on Thursday, September 30 from 9pm-2am and attended by the likes of Nettwork Recording Artist K-OS and the world’s first eco supermodel, Summer Rayne Oakes. Tickets are $30 and available online at www.ecofashion-week.com.

Vancouver International Film Festival is the largest annual showcase of Canadian film in the world, featuring 86 films from longtime filmmakers to new talent, all under the umbrella of the Canadian Images series.

On our radar is Amazon Falls, directed by Katrin Bowen who was born in England and moved to Linden, Alberta at the age of five where she spent her childhood growing up in the Mennonite community. Her journey took her to Los Angeles, where she acted in b-movie kickboxing films before moving to Vancouver to write and direct independent films.

Now, an award-winning director, this is Bowen’s first feature and what’s even more amazing is that it was shot in 12 days on a shoestring budget. “Making Amazon Falls has got to be the fastest concept to turn around in recorded history,” says screenwriter Curry Hitchborn. “It was two weeks straight of non-stop writing. I put my entire life on hold and I’m so glad I did. I dived in and look what was produced: this phenomenal film.”

Based on Bowen’s experiences in Los Angeles, Amazon Falls unapologetically exposed the grit behind the glitz of fame, featuring former beauty queen April Telek, from Flight 93, who plays Jana, an aging starlet who refused to give up on her Hollywood dream.

Catch a VIFF public screening of Amazon Falls (www.amazonfalls.com) on Tuesday, October 5th at 9:30, Thursday, October 7th at 2:50pm, or Tuesday, October 12 at 12:40pm at the Empire Granville 7.

Vancouver indie-band, The Hextalls, is the sound of wild, pop punk music. Injecting upbeat music with comical lyrics, the band formed in 1998, playing extensively across Canada with their first album.

The band split up for five years, reuniting in 2007, and recently released a brand new album, Get Smashed, described as “17 songs above love and video games”.

With songs like The Final Countdown II, I Don’t Wanna Be A New York Ranger, and Kristine, all led by front man Devin Hextall, we’ll go to bat for this Vancouver gem. Check out the band’s website at http://thehextalls.pcriot.com or their Facebook page for upcoming tour dates.

Vancouver 2010

Posted on 26 February 2010 by Nicole Stewart

It’s hard to believe the Vancouver 2010 Olympic games will be coming to an end in a matter of days. We have experienced moments of frustration as athletes were disqualified for touching another athlete’s skate or entering the wrong lane in the heat of the moment. Our hearts sunk into our stomachs when the fatal luge crash ended the life of Olympian Nodar Kumaritashvili.

But it is important to remember that there have been moments of great triumph as well. Take the first gold medal on home soil by Alexandre Bilodeau, the flawless Ice Dance by Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, and the unexpected defeat over Russia in men’s hockey. But the things Vancouverites will remember for years to come are the people and parties.

And yes, it’s true: Vancouver has felt like a maze with miles upon miles of fencing and cattle call like lines, herding the masses to wait endlessly pretty much everywhere.

The zip line running through Robson Square has been a crowd pleaser – to watch at least. If you actually want to experience the magic of the 20-30 second ride you’ll have to wait in line for about 8 hours. I think we’ll be heading up to Whistler this summer, instead, thank you very much.

Rest assured the fashion community has not been left out. There have been countless events all over town to attend and even the provincial houses have been keeping it interesting.

On February 21, Alberta House had Paul Hardy in to share his inspiration for his 2010 collection and preview one of his signature pieces with Heather Marks. The established designer has dressed celebrities like Kate Hudson, Alanis Morissette, Bette Midler, Kelly Rowan, and Sarah McLachlan.

It is Ontario House, though, that has been touted as one of the best attractions, with stylish white and blue ropes hanging in the hundreds along the front of the building. But perhaps the best part of this pavilion are the vests (pictured with designers above), designed by Toronto Fashion Incubator’s in-house designers Jas Banwait, Paris Li, Mana Mojaver of MANAM, Sylvia Bora of Bora Birs, and Natalie Good/Rebecca Lipson of Andy Hall.

“The vest is an encompassment of five completely different styles – menswear, streetwear, eveningwear, funky and chic daywear,” says Jas Banwitt of Savillian (savillian.com). “Like Ontario, our diverse talents have been positively brought together to create a work of art! We have a lot of up and coming strong talent in Ontario. This vest represents the future of fashion.”

The vests, worn by 26 Ministry of Tourism employees including the Deputy Minister, are fashionable and functional, with hidden zippers and white contrast piping along the placket, a high collar, military-style epaulettes, and an optional cinching waist tie for women.

“We are extremely grateful to be awarded this incredible opportunity,” notes Susan Langdon, the Executive Director of the Toronto Fashion Incubator (fashionincubator.com). “The fashion industry is an important economic sector in Ontario and having a platform like the Olympics to showcase the calibre of local design and manufacturing is very meaningful to our community. It’s also the perfect occasion to show the world that although the TFI designers who came together to create the vests aren’t world-class athletes, they share that same Olympic spirit of teamwork.”
