Island Life

Fans of Montreal band Islands have been waiting a long time for a follow-up to 2005’s Return to the Sea. But on May 20, 2008, the six guys signed under the Anti Records label will finally be releasing their sophomore effort, Arm’s Way.

Islands is known for its calypso-infused space pop. Yes, that’s as breezy and sweet as it sounds. Its two major singles, “Rough Gem” and “Don’t Call Me Whitney, Bobby” are joyful and youthful, simple and light. Front man Nick T.’s voice is sweet and airy.

“The Arm,” the first single off the new album, is instrumentally rich and galloping. The band’s sound still hints of a laidback calypso feel, but it is much more string- and bass-heavy, interweaving psychedelic rock guitar riffs and wailing violins. Meanwhile, Nick T.’s voice has also matured, as he sings “That’s why the arm came for you” above the powerful accompaniment.
