What’s That Noise?

Ghost Bees

Ghost Bees is what you would expect to hear if you went for an early morning walk through a lush forest scattered with nymphs. The words “whimsical,” “haunting,” and “ancient” come to mind when describing the intoxicating sound of Ghost Bees. Comprised of twin sisters Romy and Sari Lightman and Amber Phelps, the trio weaves delicate and magical melodies over antique mandolin, guitar, and violin.

After recording its self-titled EP in 2006, Ghost Bees has toured Canada twice, as well as various cities across the US. This April, the band released its debut album, Tasseomancy, under Youth Club Records. The album shows off Ghost Bees’ refined string instrumentals, as well as the Lightman sisters’ eloquent telling of myth and fantasy.

“Vampires of the West Coast,” the single off the band’s album, features trickling acoustic instrumentals, illuminating harmonies, and beautifully poetic lyrics. The single “Tasseomancy” is achingly sad and delicate. Both songs are like modern fairy tales with a throwback to almost medieval times. Those who are fans of Joanna Newsom will surely love the romantic, old-world feel of Ghost Bees.

Ghost Bees will be touring extensively across Canada from the beginning of April right through to March 2009. For a complete list of tour dates, visit Ghost Bees’ MySpace at www.myspace.com/ghostbees.
