Out with the Old

This is an exciting time for fashion. Roughly once per decade, fashion goes through a complete overhaul. For example, the ’60s are remembered for hippie style as much as the ’80s are remembered for big hair and glam metal. As the first decade of the new millennium nears its end, fashion, it seems, is right on schedule, with stunning turns for the upcoming year. With low rise, straight leg, and tight tanks looking dated, is fashion entering a new era?

THEN

Bare midriffs, low rise waistlines, tiny tops, and spaghetti straps were an early 2000s style. Issues with visible bra straps because of these shoulder-baring tops eventually led to bras being matched to this outfit.

NOW
Spaghetti straps and bare midriffs have become passé as we inch toward the end of this decade. Interesting T-shirts, cap sleeves, and long, loose tanks are a modern and refreshing look for Spring 2008. Pants have gone to extremes, with either a skinny leg or a wide leg cut.

THEN
Structured, form-fitting dresses, bare legs, belted waists, and matching shoes have been a popular look for dresses in recent years. The early 2000s focused largely on the hour

NOW
Light, flowing fabrics and edgy prints paired with gladiator sandals are heating up Spring/Summer ’08 runways.

Sheer fabrics and loose, non-form-fitting cuts.

Dressing into the New Year

Winter
Keep: skinny jeans and leggings. More than a passing trend, the skinny leg is going strong. Worn with dresses, boots, and loose-fitting tops, the skinny leg is the look of the next decade.

Ditch: extra low rise waistbands and boot cut legs. On their way out, boot cut jeans just don’t work as well with those fab mid-calf boots.

Summer
It’s going to be all about legs, legs, legs. To not look too exposed, cover the arms with a loose, sheer, longer-length top.

Ditch: spaghetti strap tanks.
