She’s a winner

Who will be dressing the next generation? It is definitely Nicole Bridger, who recently won British Columbia Fashion Week’s Generation Next contest. With experience interning under Vivienne Westwood and co-designing the Oqoqo label, Nicole Bridger has the potential to take the international fashion world by storm.

GLOSS: When did you begin designing the Nicole Bridger collection?
NB: I started the label a year and a half ago. Since I decided to go into fashion when I was 16, I always wanted my own label. I just needed to get the education and experience first.

GLOSS: How did you hone your design skills?
NB: I went to Ryerson University in Toronto and got my degree in fashion design. I interned with many Canadian designers and then interned with Vivienne Westwood in London. I knew I wanted to learn business, so I came back to Vancouver and co-created Oqoqo for Lululemon. After that, I was ready to create my own.

GLOSS: How would you describe your spring collection?
NB: The palette is soft and happy. The pieces are easy to wear but have a lot of expression at the same time. Everything can be worn together.

GLOSS: What is your signature style?
NB: I like to use comfortable fabrics and create movement into the garment or create a draping effect.

GLOSS: What are the main colours for the spring collection?
NB: Boudoir pink, foggy grey, beiges, and white.

GLOSS: How did participating in BC Fashion Week’s Generation Next contest feel?
NB: It was great! I was very ready to show and was excited to have the opportunity.

GLOSS:  What went through your mind when you were announced as the winner?
NB: Actually, I was just trying not to fidget and look cool. It was kind of awkward standing in front of everyone waiting to hear the results.

GLOSS: What is the best part about being chosen as the winner?
NB: Getting to show our entire collection next season and the exposure. Actually, it was also really nice to have a chance to show many of my friends and family what I do with my time. Everyone has been so supportive.

GLOSS: Where can people purchase your collection?
NB: The stores are listed on our website at www.nicolebridger.com.

GLOSS: Where do you want to go from here?
NB: Distribute more across North America, open our own boutique, show in New York Fashion Week. And just have fun doing it.

GLOSS: What would you like to say to other young people who want to participate in Generation Next or make it in the Canadian fashion industry?
NB: Absolutely apply. It’s a great opportunity and an exciting way to see new young designers in Vancouver.
