There’s no business like it

Working at a cosmetics counter is a great way to start out in the beauty industry.  The experience of working with all different types of faces will give you real world experience you could never learn in school.  While working at these counters, you can try all sorts of different products and let’s not forget the oodles of free product to help build your kit.  Here are some tips for anyone wanting to get their foot in the door.

  1. Know the line.

If you’re looking to work for a makeup line that will let you play with lots of color and looks, you should find a counter that reflects your image.  You will stick out like a sore thumb if you’re wearing loads of makeup and your clientele is all about the natural look.

  1. Stand out from the crowd.

This is a competitive industry and you need to know what you’re up against.  Research the line, know some key products, and dazzle them with your charm.

  1. Selling is the bottom line.

The truth? Cosmetic companies are looking for someone who can sell their product.  If you’re an incredible artist, but can’t convince customers to purchase products, you might want to apply to be a demo.  A demo is someone who works directly for the vendor and is called upon for special events when the counter requires extra help.

  1. Be flexible with your technique.

Companies want you to do things “their way” so they will train you accordingly.  If you’re not comfortable with their techniques you need to do a little research and find a company that practices methods you’re comfortable with.

  1. Understanding skin care is a big plus.

Though not required, if you know a thing or two about skincare, you have got a big advantage over other applicants.

  1. Don’t fake it.

These days, consumers are a lot more knowledgeable about products and ingredients.  If you don’t know what hyluronic acid is, don’t mention it.

  1. Find out how much you can grow.

Lots of companies have great positions you don’t even know about.  You might find your dream job without even knowing it exists!

Good luck with your search and remember; personality goes a long way!
