What's That Noise?

Infighter

Stylish and sleek are the best words to describe Toronto band Infighter’s appearance. Actually, those same words could also describe the band’s post-punk, indie-rock sound. Newly formed in late 2005, this six-piece band already has an independently released album to its name, simply titled infighter, and an exciting touring schedule to boot.

Led by the energetic Simeon Ross on lead vocals and guitar, this boy-girl band also features the talents of Brad Sveistrup on lead guitar, Ami Spears on vocals and synthesizer, Harrison Coe on keyboards, Scott Hildebrandt on bass, and Gail Thompson on drums. While all members of Infighter have been previously involved in other bands, such as Toronto band Charmer, Calgary band Red Autumn Fall, and Winnipeg’s Novillero, the sextet has finally honed an addictively charming sound together. Infighter released its self-titled debut in 2006, which was produced by Steve Payne of Toronto band Boy. Most of the songs appearing on the album were written by Ross and Sveistrup.

Infighter’s sound has often been compared to the likes of Interpol, the Killers, and the Kaiser Chiefs, due largely in part to its catchy, post-punk guitar riffs and energetic, foot-stomping beats. The band also sounds similar to Canadian indie-band Stars, thanks to Spears’ sweet, soft falsetto interlaced with Ross’s powerful vocals. The fast-paced single “Regret” shows influences from Joy Division and The Cure. And “Silencer” is a brilliant example of how synthesizers layered upon beating guitar riffs create a hypnotic effect.

Infighter will be bringing its mod wardrobe and spiky guitar rock to Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto in the new year. Catch one of the band’s famous live performances for a night of light indie-rock. For a complete list of tour dates, visit the band’s website at www.infighter.ca.
