Where the Hell is Helsinki?

When in search of an exotic summer retreat, Finland's northern climate seems a far cry from ideal. But after sweltering hot humidity, rainy days, and urban exhaust, Helsinki's endless sunny afternoons and oceanic air beckon us to throw in the towel and head to the Baltic.

Largely unknown to the Canadian adventurer, this Scandinavian country comes equipped with all the perks and festivities of a typical European vacation while skipping the hassle of tourist traffic. Not only is this spot aesthetically stunning, the cool, calm Finnish vibe makes Finland the perfect summer escape.

The "hidden gem" of a country throws some serious events, making it a noteworthy stop for any music, arts, or culture enthusiast. The Pori Summer Jazz Festival, hosting world-renowned performers such as Elvis Costello, Sly and the Family Stone, India Arie, and Steely Dan, is just one of many world-class events within driving distance of Helsinki's coast-side location.

For good food, check out Tori, one of Helsinki's most eclectic restos. If you’re looking to combine touristic sightseeing with authentic Finnish fun, go have an apple cider (they seem to love it over there) at Torni, a fabulous rooftop bar with an artsy interior and a stunning, 360-degree view of the city. Helsinki's climate of heavy-drinking (the city has the highest consumption per capita in Europe) makes for a wild night almost anywhere you go. For the scenester in all of us, stop by Lux or Kalle, where you'll find yourself getting hopelessly intoxicated with Helsinki's "it" crowd. For a truly Finnish experience, grab yourself a nokia, warm up in any of its infamous public saunas, and party till the sun goes down — which is never before midnight.
