Who is Generation Next?

Laura Presber is in the winner's circle. Last season’s Generation Next champion, Lara Presber, revealed her Spring 2009 collection during BC Fashion Week. Lit in a green glow, the show was fresh and fairly minimal in colour and silhouette. White, khaki, army green and a single printed fabric were used throughout. Semi fitted dresses with crew or v necks, pencil skirts and a kimono-esque wrap dress made up the mix. Prominent side pockets were used on dresses and capris. QuirkyInteresting details, like the buttoned down bib front and the sheer fabric panels attached past the hem of a skirt and dress, gave the subtle styles athat unique edge. On the whole, it was a refreshing, wearable collection from a talented new designer.

This year, three designers faced off in British Columbia Fashion Week’s third Generation Next competition. The winner received a fantastic prize package including a spot in next seasons BCFW, public relations services from Honey Mustard, a booth at Portobello West, and a Rowena steamer.

The first collection was Two of Hearts, comprised mainly of basics such as grey leggings, bright cotton tunics, and tees with butterfly motifs. The strongest pieces were the white shirt dresses with which they closed. Overall, I think it would be suited to a younger market.

Joseph and Elizabeth were up next. They offered some tailored pieces including vests and pantsuits in a black, white, and cream colour palette. I enjoyed their pretty frocks, like a simple white tank dress with flirty, layered ruffle hem and a more sophisticated tube dress with a black bust and flowing printed body.

Last to show was Red Jade. For me this was the obvious standout. High-waisted bottoms in black and beige, the essential little black dress in a blouson style with batwing sleeves, a beige funnel neck dress with red patent belt, and, finally, a structured grey trench with stand up collar and off centre buttons closed the show on a high note.

In this case, they truly did save the best for last, and the judges agreed. Margarita Angelatos of Red Jade seemed shocked and grateful. I look forward to seeing her next season at BCFW.
