Detailed Designs

With most designers putting out collections with an average of 60 pieces, it is impressive to hear that Simon Chang, who has been designing for two decades, manages to put out womenswear collections with some 300 pieces! Based in Montreal, he fuses his Canadian sensibility with a European flair to create trendy, wearable fashions.

For Fall ’08, he focused on structured outerwear and flirty evening looks. A belted black anorak with an elaborate folded collar and floral burn out print highlighted his meticulous attention to detail. This was further displayed with a playful, empire waist, velvet dress with layered ruffle hem and an embellished bust. Prints, like the zebra print trench that opened the show, were prominent. Flashy fabrics were utilized throughout the collection, like in the icy metallic trapeze dress with jewelled neckline. The show ended with a striking dress featuring a folded, chiffon shoulder element that connected across the back.

“I want women to be continually surprised and energized by my clothes and accessories,” says Simon, and it appears that he has found a way to do just that.
