What's That noise?

We Are Wolves

We Are Wolves from Montreal will have your legs electrified and stomping on the dance floor. Their high-energy sets will have your heart racing and your arms thrashing. Their sound is not for the weak at heart or the uptight. Since forming in 2000, We Are Wolves has become a fusion of post-punk rock, dance rock, and electro.

Made up of Alexander Ortiz on lead vocals and bass, Vincent Levesque on keyboard and backup vocals, and Antonin Marquis on drums and backup vocals, the band released their debut album, Non-Stop Je Te Plie en Deux, on U.S. label Fat Possum Records in 2005. They began touring extensively, playing festivals like SXSW, Virgin Fest, and Osheaga. In 2007, the band released the highly addictive, foot-stomping single “Fight & Kiss” on an EP which also featured “Coconut 155.” While the first single showcased We Are Wolves’ ability to push towards a more electronic sound, the latter single was pure rock, demonstrating the band’s diversity to meld both genres.

In late 2007, the band released their follow-up album, Total Magique, which was very well received on both Pitchfork and Spin. The album solidified the band’s ability to successfully mix electronic with post-punk rock for a totally unique and invigorating sound. The single “Teenage, Bats & Anthropology” features heavy drums and a riotous sound, reminiscent of TV on the Radio’s “Wolf Like Me” single. Another single, “Magique” begins with distorted robotic-like sounds and lots of fun with the synthesizer, while maintaining the rock aspect with a very catchy riff.
