Pete Samples

Pete Samples is a multi-instrumentalist from Montreal (by way of Winnipeg) who’llhave you daydreaming about cinematic landscapes from his very first note.. Using vocals, guitar, piano, and less conventional instruments like glockenspiel mixed with hip-hop beats.

Samples released his debut album, An Unsent Letter, on Vinyl Republic Records in 200,showcasing  his thematic approach oflayering simple piano riffs over bass chords over hip-hop inspired rhythms. He also experimented extensively with overlapping voices for a multi-sensory and explosive experience. In 2007, Samples released his follow-up, Yours Makes Mine, which grew directly out of the sound on his first album, just more refined and  mature. Samples definitely went with less beats and a more melodic feel, which only grew to his sound being likened to cinematography. Singles like “If Something Changed” and “Between Exhales” were very wavelike and meandering, think Sigur Ros with an underlying hip-hop sound.

On his 2008 release, The Jumper Cables, it’s clear that Samples has moved towards a more commercially sweet sound. It’s much less experimental, but still, without a doubt, a very emotionally experimental experience. His singles “Bobby Raindrop” and “The Jumper Cables” can almost be compared to Sufjan Stevens’ work during his “Michigan” phase, epic, multi-instrumental storytelling.

Pete Sample will be making several stops on the East Coast of Canada in late August, you can catch Samples’ show for a unique and thoughtful multi-sensory experience. For a complete list of tour dates, visit his website at http://www.petesamples.com/.
