Summer Solstice Festival at the Tantalus Vineyard

In Greek mythology, Tantalus was one badass king who stole nectar from the gods and, as punishment for his crime, was doomed to spend eternity just out of arm’s reach of fruit and drink. As the root of the world “tantalize”, Tantalus shares his name with an up-and-coming wine from the Okanagan region.  And tantalize it does.

Nestled above the lake on the east slopes of Kelowna, the Tantalus Vineyard celebrated its Summer Solstice Festival on June 22nd and 23rd. The candlelit outdoor party was to honour the vineyard’s friends and clients and included out-of-this-world appies (complete with delicious lamb chapattis and fresh seafood), a selection of fine wines and a live band.

Though this 50-acre parcel may be one of the oldest continually producing vineyards in the region, the brand and product have taken on new meaning with the addition of the resident winemaker (and hottie) Matt Holmes.

As a young vintner who has worked in wineries around the globe, Holmes’ inspired vision has helped to launch the award-winning Tantalus riesling and ice wine riesling. A pinot noir is soon to follow.  His passion and commitment to detail are evident in his blends, and the small vineyard’s practices of sustainable viticulture and hand tending translate into a lush, fruity and tropical vintage that is gentle yet commanding.

The Tantalus brand is currently available in select restaurants and stores in British Columbia or by special order through their website at www.tantalus.ca.  With a huge construction project in the works - including plans for a store and tasting area - this label will explode on to the scene faster than you can pour yourself a drink.
