Where art thou, Bard? on the Beach!

Tired of the same old West Coast summer attraction? Enjoy an evening out at Vancouver’s Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival. Situated perfectly along the water’s edge at Vanier Park, two stages play host to this year’s 18th season production of four Shakespearean classics. The timeless renditions of Romeo and Juliet along with Taming of the Shrew are featured on the Mainstage. Julius Caesar and Timon of Athens take place on the Studio Stage.

Romeo and Juliet is directed by Bard veteran Dean Paul Gibson, and the talented ensemble’s performance makes this experience absolutely worthwhile. Enjoy the intimate proximity to the actors on stage in a tent overlooking British Columbia’s mountains for a mood that is romantic and contemplative. Led by Kyle Rideout as Romeo and Taylor Trowbridge as Juliet, the pair of star-crossed lovers float on stage with a captivating chemistry. Notable performances are contributed by Bob Frazer as Mercutio and Lois Anderson as the Nurse. Powered by soft yet appropriate lighting and a simple neo-classical set design, the mood of this year’s Romeo and Juliet is sure to please.

A summer in the city is not complete without attending Bard on the Beach. Tug on those inner heartstrings with moments from one of the most notable historical love stories ever.

Bard on the Beach runs in Vancouver until September 23, 2007. For more information and the full season schedule, visit www.bardonthebeach.org.
